Make sure permissions are correct and don’t alter your hostname after Active Directory is configured. Set up DNS properly on your router as well. I had a problem with my first attempt at WS—my settings were off, so I couldn’t join the domain. Also, remember to perform daily or weekly backups using the Windows Server backup tool.

Are you looking for resources to master this topic? I can suggest a weekly backup routine instead of daily practice. For setting the router's DNS, there are simple guides that walk you through the process step by step.

Google is your top ally, perhaps YouTube too. Or you might follow what I used to do—try experimenting and learning from your own experiences and errors. Attempt to figure things out on your own by reading what the screen says, then fall back on searching online.

Refers to the complete Windows Server 2012 edition, not the Home Server version.
