Hi, Do you need a Microsoft account to log into your MS account for Windows 11 or during the Win 11 installation? Can you use BitLocker in Windows 11 Home, or do you have to use it without a Microsoft account? Is there any encryption tool in Windows 11 Home? If not, what are some free alternatives that work with Hardware TPM? I ask this because Windows 11 relies on TPM and won't run without it. So why not make use of it right away? Encryption that doesn't use TPM is slower, less secure software. Encryption? Cheers,
BitLocker is only available on Windows 11 Pro computers. On standard accounts, you don't really need it until first install, just so things activate correctly. Then if you want stuff from the Microsoft Store, create some Local accounts for daily tasks and use those instead of your main one. That's how I run my setup. My Windows 11 PC has been running smoothly over a year now. I log into the MS account maybe twice a week. Same goes with all my old Windows 10 computers.
If there is no internet when you set up, just skip making an account for now. Turn off the ethernet or wifi.
I want to buy a Windows 11 Home laptop and if someone steals mine, I need to turn on encryption so my stuff can't be read. If this is only for Pro versions, do you know any free apps that use the built-in hardware security feature TPM?
If your serial number works, it turns on right away. You don't need an account. But if you want to keep using Windows when you swap parts or find that the serial stops working, having an account is a safety net.
BitLocker isn't available on the free Home version of Windows 11. To turn on BitLocker, you need to buy and use the Pro edition instead. You can also use a regular user account without signing in to your Microsoft account if you like. However, I don't know much about using it with a local account because I've never used BitLocker before even though I have the Pro version. So, I think I could turn on BitLocker anytime now. There are other free tools like 7-zip and Veracrypt that can help too. But if you want to get your files back from a drive later using a recovery USB or DVD, those won't work because of how secure these programs make things. You can use BitLocker for encrypting files with special keys. You could save those key info to your Microsoft account. But BitLocker needs the Pro version of Windows 11 to be activated.
