A long time ago in a magazine, I recall seeing a keyboard with keys that could be positioned wherever needed. I don’t remember much about this device except that the keys stayed fixed in place due to something attached beneath them. For instance, if you wanted a shift key next to the W, it was possible.

I’m searching for something similar because of my disability, which makes it hard to reach far or handle small objects quickly. I tried a mini keyboard, but the keys were too close together. If I could move the keys wherever I wanted them, I’d be able to enjoy gaming more and gain independence—so I wouldn’t need help with tasks like winning a battle or anything similar.

Looking at the picture, you can see I have to use a splint to keep my index finger straight. Having that in place while playing a first-person shooter isn’t ideal. I prefer the W key, but accidentally hitting the S is quite annoying. Still, I’m grateful I can play at all.

If you have any suggestions, please share them. Thanks!

Sadly, such options no longer exist. But I suggest checking out the Xbox Adaptive Controller, created for individuals with disabilities. Microsoft also revealed several accessories with comparable concepts.

Even if I'm not acquainted with this item, could adjusting the key mappings and swapping keycaps help resolve the issue? There are tools such as reWASD that let you assign keys to controller buttons.

There are various keyboards featuring unique designs, though many come at a higher cost and are mechanical in nature. If you experience problems with keys being too close together, many of the higher-quality options usually have wider spacing between them compared to more affordable models.

Search for ergonomic or disability-specific keyboards, as some specialized companies produce such items. Certain keyboards are tailored for one-handed use, offering non-standard key spacings.
