Do you have any experience with Displayport issues following the June Windows update patches?
Hi everyone..
According to the details, my old machine was functioning properly. I began the "patch tuesday" June Patch update and after rebooting it, I noticed the display didn’t return. I left it on for about 30 minutes just to confirm everything restarted correctly, but still there was no display. After that, I turned it off briefly with a short press of the power button and then restarted it again—still nothing. No BIOS information or Windows output. So I changed the cables to HDMI and everything worked fine; the display came back and Windows booted normally (BIOS info also displayed). It hasn’t been thoroughly investigated yet. For example, I didn’t switch the DisplayPort cables or try another monitor, but since it was working perfectly before the patch and broke afterward, I suspect this might be the problem. I also performed a clean install of the display drivers (Nvidia latest 512.95 for my old GTX 970 card with 1 x Displayport, 1 x HDMI, 2 x DVI outputs), but it still didn’t work. The rest of the machine is quite old, but it’s fully updated with Windows 10 Pro 64 and version 21H2, running on an ASUS P6T Deluxe V2 Mobo with a slightly overclocked i7 5820k. I couldn’t find any way to force or confirm the graphics card was sending a signal to the DisplayPort or another interface—we just seem to have to rely on it to connect via whatever cable is used. Anyway, is this an isolated issue or do others see similar problems? And what’s your advice? Thanks in advance for any help.
With the HDMI connected and functioning, insert the display port cable into the monitor and GPU. Open the Nvidia control panel and verify that multiple monitor settings are accessible. Mark the option if available, then attempt to switch the monitor to display port mode.
Hi.. thanks for your reply.
I can verify that the monitor (HP E231) is set to autodetect and prioritize Displayport. When I tried to use it without a display, I turned it off and back on while the computer was running but not showing anything. After that, the monitor displayed on the screen, scanning all input ports—Displayport, DVI, and VGA—and confirmed it couldn’t find any signal before deciding to power down.
When I connected an HDMI cable (using a DVI adapter), it was immediately detected and the screen lit up.
Before the reboot after the driver update, everything worked smoothly. I performed a clean driver installation on the Nvidia installer, just a quick step, and should be good with cables and drivers. Still, I’ll try again when I’m back.
If anyone else has any input, please share it in the meantime.
Cheers
I used the DDU to remove the old driver.
Then I reinstalled the new Nvidia drivers (516.40, which was released after my previous attempts... so I did that). It ticked the "clean install" even though I cleared it with the DDU tool.
Still no change... it didn’t work.
I switched to a known good cable from my main PC, which was working fine.
No improvement... it remained unresponsive.
Checked the monitor on my main PC and the E 231 monitor worked instantly when connected via Displayport cable/interface.
So I think I did all reasonable tests. The only conclusion is that the Windows update triggered the failure.
Reminder: the updates installed on "Patch tuesday" (kb5014699, KB5013887, KB890830) caused the issue.
Any more ideas?
With the HDMI connected and functioning, insert the display port cable into the monitor and GPU. Open the Nvidia control panel and verify that multiple monitor settings are accessible. Mark the option if available, then attempt to switch the monitor to display port mode.
Thank you... that worked!!!
Selecting the new Displayport monitor caused the screen to go black momentarily, making me worry about failure. After roughly four seconds it came back on (the wait was intriguing).
Once it functioned properly, I restarted the PC with both HDMI and Displayport connections plugged in, and everything operated as expected, with Displayport remaining active.
So thank you very much... any insight into what might have happened? I’d like to learn more.
Best regards
It's just a theory, but what I believe occurs when windows updates it modifies files that the gpu drivers use to show content. When this doesn't occur, it falls back to the default HDMI. So when both cables are connected simultaneously, it confirms the GPU is using HDMI and the display port becomes active. This was my reasoning at least with two cables plugged in together. Who knows for sure though!? Glad you're back now.
Hello, I just installed a windows update, I came back with black screen, main screen saying "no signal detected". also noteworthy, no signal to mouse and keyboard aswell on startup.
I unplug the display port main screen, and start with my second screen which is on hdmi.
I suddenly have signal on keyboard and mouse on upstart and I get a picture on secondary screen. I then plug in the display port and try to do what you say here, I see the box of the main screen, I cannot click on it tho, nothing happens. I see the name of the monitor in the nvidia controll panel etc.
also tried installing new drivers for the GPU. but no luck.
