Do you have a special website to ask about?
I don't need parental control because I know my own password. Actually, I'm really stuck on a few websites that take too much time and energy from me. I want to know if there is any software or extension that can stop me from going to those sites for a certain amount of time. Probably not all passwords will work this way... only after the time has passed do I need someone else? The final question is: does it work on different browsers, like Chrome and Firefox? If so, it would be very useful.
I have heard about parental control for years but never tried it before. Is it something that can block me from visiting certain sites? Actually, I am not a parent; I personally want to stop myself from going to some websites I get too attached to. I already have someone else who will set the passwords for me. So is Parental Control what I need? Which software should you recommend?
If you have the password and know how you set things up, you can undo them yourself. But since you don't trust yourself, someone else is going to have to do all the setup work. If it's not someone else, then you are stuck with yourself. A better idea would be to change your habits or just let it run its course and hope you get bored or grow up enough at some point.
Make an fake file that lists your websites, then tell Windows to change it later by using its Task Scheduler.
Yeah, Vyrvelata got it. Whatever you set up, you can always take it back if you change your mind.
My only idea right now is write a python script that checks incoming Wireshark packets. If the destination IP matches the website I don't want to see, I'll press alt+f4 or ctrl+w instead. I haven't tried using the library that reads Wireshark data yet, but it might have a command for checking the destination IP. You can also save this as a file to run at startup and use pyinstaller to make it an executable. This way, you won't see the command line or right-click tray when running it in the background. Even if I close the app, that's probably my best option going forward.
Anyone who tries to set the lock can take it out now and start over with step one.
It all depends which device you are talking about. Usually when I think PC, I picture my TV. You should probably be able to set the time on it and make sure it respects the content flags at the start of most shows. So if you pick TV-13, you won't see shows with a higher rating like TV-MA or even something with a flag. Not every show has that flag, but this helps. You said though you want to avoid certain websites. That makes me think you might be worried about what happens online, not just on the TV. There are lots of "parental control" apps that will block things like gambling and nudity. You should be able to add any site you want even if it's not on a list. It will work. But there are still ways around this. My mom tried this to stop my brother from doing bad things, but it bothered me when I went up there to see my dad while she was gone. He wasn't able to care for himself and needed help all the time, even though he had been sick since we were young. I was over 19 and married, so that's a lot of responsibility. I won't explain how to get around this because it goes against the rules here. But once I knew what my mom did, I knew exactly how to fix it. My advice isn't to just rely on these tech tricks. You should actually ask for help with your problem instead. It will be much better in the end.
