Even with a 5GHz overclock, performance remains poor compared to today's CPUs. It's an Intel 14nm chip—maybe only noticeable in simple games like R6 and CS, but a significant issue in most titles.

Hmm, looks like your PC might have a problem not with the CPU or GPU. A 4090 at a lower price should work fine for those games, while an 8700k in stock should handle most of them without trouble. Ubi games and flight sim are quite different, though :p. One is heavily affected by DRM, and flight sim behaves more like the other.

Reviewed the data from AnteTech’s CPU benchmarking page. Compared 9900K and 12900K performance across various tasks. Calculated relative improvements to highlight strengths. The results suggest noticeable gains for certain workloads, especially in accuracy-sensitive scenarios.

There’s a small issue with colors, but overall the 9900k runs smoothly. It’s not much slower than others, and a 5GHz setup gives it solid performance. You won’t have trouble with gaming, and it should easily hit 144fps in compatible titles. The only cases where it might struggle are with heavily encoded games like Ubisoft titles, flight simulators, or poorly optimized apps.

It displays both theoretical and actual performance, though when compared across games the variations are quite minimal. This remains evident in titles capable of sustaining over 100 frames per second and requiring significant processing power, though such cases are relatively rare.

Here’s a revised version of your message:

I appreciate all the responses you've sent. Even though we don't fully align on everything, I still have a good sense of what to expect after an upgrade. Based on your comments, the 9900K remains a solid CPU, but it's beginning to show signs of aging and is running noticeably slower than today's models. If I stick with my 3080, the performance gap would be around 10-20%. Typically, I wait until I've moved one generation before upgrading. I've used GTX 580, GTX 770, GTX 1080, and now the RTX 3080. Right now, I'm not planning a GPU upgrade. So I'm stuck in a fairly standard position. The 10-20% difference isn't significant enough for me to seriously think about upgrading at this time.

I just swapped my 9700k for a 7950x. While it wasn’t terrible, it was beginning to show its age and lagged noticeably in games like Vic3. I’d likely hesitate to upgrade if you’re on 10th generation or newer—this depends more on your needs and budget.

It varies by game; for example, a jump from 9900k to 13900k gave a noticeable boost around 150fps. In 2042 it was closer to 60-80 in MW2. The 9900k setting isn’t very impressive, and I’d love to maintain 1080p without running out of power for recording at the same quality as 1440p anymore.

Also try the 3080 model. It runs at 5GHz with a 8700KHZ clock, then boosts to 5.2GHz on the 10900KF. The P-core version hits 13700KHZ. I think a new desk would have been better.
