My current system is around four years old, including the RTX 3080 I added in December 2020. I mainly use it for gaming and some light video editing. I’m thinking about upgrading with a new CPU or motherboard and planning an SFF ITX build. I’ll keep only my storage and GPU, and you can find my full specs in my profile. I’m unsure if now is the best time to upgrade—I’ve kept up with the latest CPUs from Intel and AMD but don’t know much about how much performance improvement the newest chips offer compared to my old 9900K. I’m looking at options like 13600K, 13700K, 7700X, and 7900X, but I’m not focused on getting higher scores in benchmarks. My goal is to see if there’s a noticeable difference in everyday tasks.

bullshit !! i have the same generation (8700K 5Ghz) and its bottlenecking my 4090 AF !! Im getting same FPS as my "old" 3080 in all games ! So its a total waste of money to purchase 4090 with CPUs older than 12 Gen. So I just ordered 13700K...hopefully to try to minimalize the bottnecking as much as possible...

Be careful, the details aren't that straightforward. Which games are you using? At what settings and resolutions? A 3080 is quite capable, but at 1080p it might give you more cards than you need. A 9900k and 8700k behave very differently in newer titles.

It's actually quite straightforward... don't rely solely on the newest GPUs and assume you'll get every advantage. You're seeing a mix of titles like AAA games at 3840x1600, COD, Spiderman, Hitman3, ACvalhalla, Horizon Zero, Far Cry6, Plague Tale, and flight sims. In Spiderman you consistently hit around 75 FPS with everything running smoothly! Even with RT, you're still getting 50-55 FPS.

The 9900k offers roughly 15% fewer frames per second than the 12900k in Warzone 1440p at 3080Ti.

I haven't found a good reason to upgrade just the CPU unless you have a 4090. The best option depends on whether you're using a 13700K DDR5 or a 5800X3D. For a 4090, upgrading from PCIe 3.0 to 4.0 is around 5%, and CPUs usually boost speed by 40-50%. Rarely, older models like the 9900K can hit 90-100fps at low settings compared to newer chips. Keeping the 3080 gives a 10% gain, but only in specific cases.
