Motherboards play a role mainly because companies release subpar products at prices they shouldn’t. There are many affordable B450 boards around that perform well for 3600 or 3700x models. You don’t require anything more expensive than that unless you’re aiming for serious overclocking. An X570 won’t necessarily boost performance much beyond what you’d get from a high-end X470 or X570. Some x570 options are decent too, especially if your BIOS is current and reviews are positive. A budget b350 or x370 can work if the BIOS is updated and feedback is favorable. Many of these boards are actually quite solid in quality. I personally don’t prefer x570 models. Their cost is excessive and adding a fan on most boards isn’t ideal. Noise isn’t the main concern. The real issue is that cheap fans can fail silently, leading to major problems. You usually don’t need PCI-E 4.0 unless you’re targeting top-tier builds, which high-end x470s rarely justify.
Checking compatibility for a R5 3600 with a low-tier B450 chipset makes sense. It’s unclear exactly what these components are designed for, but it seems reasonable to proceed.
Unless you're on a tight budget, consider upgrading to an ASUS TUF X570 motherboard for around $3700. It's a significant improvement without much extra cost.
The main focus is on reliably providing power to the CPU; budget options probably won’t perform well here, while pricier models might suit overclockers better. For a Ryzen lower-end chip I’d usually pick a standard B450 motherboard—it works just fine. I don’t overclock, I let it run naturally. For higher-end Ryzen models (like 3900 or 3950), a more advanced board would be necessary. You need improved VRM and power delivery to justify the cost for those powerful CPUs. With Intel’s higher-end chips (9700k/9900k), a better motherboard is essential, since the extra complexity makes overclocking worthwhile. You’d likely face more instability if the board can’t supply enough power for OC. Other upgrades like better heatsinks, additional M.2 slots, or newer PCIe versions (like Gen 4) can help, but the core issue remains power delivery. I’d personally consider a B450 for a 3600 processor.
It looks like the best path forward is likely the one suggested. I’m not heavily CPU-heavy, so my current 8350 should handle it well, even with a 1600 boost. For storage, I might eventually get a M.2 slot, but I’ve heard it disconnects two SATA ports—which is concerning. I’m already using five ports and most devices have six at the top, which is typical. Also, MS Explorer shows a CD drive that doesn’t exist, which is odd.
