I have an old HP laptop made with Intel processors, but it suddenly stopped working completely. Nothing works anymore. There are no lights, no fans, and it looks dead. I took it to a repair shop that said they had to replace the motherboard. I feel like they might be trying to rip me off because I don't want to pay too much for nothing. Any help on how to find out what's actually wrong?

That's going to be pretty close to impossible without using your own laptop to run tests. It could just be a broken capacitor, or it could be something really complicated like a dead CPU or chipset chip. No matter what is wrong, if the shop doesn't have a way to solder things back together, they'll need to replace the whole motherboard. If you don't trust them then take it somewhere else. Also note that if you swap out your laptop's 4th Gen Intel processor for a used one, the cost could be as high or even higher than buying a brand new similar unit.
