Do I need a new modem?
I have an Arris Surfboard SB8200 that tends to overheat. It's unclear if this is the reason for my internet instability. My modem is linked to an Asus RT-AX55, and I expect a 1GB connection speed. Usually, it drops to 300-400 MB, but after rebooting the modem it recovers to 800-900 MB. Any advice?
The model experiences thermal throttling, which is normal under high temperatures. The optimal solution is to position it in an area where airflow is possible, such as outside confined spaces like many TV stands.
Are you certain if the modem comes from your ISP or if it belongs to your own home? What is the age of the modem?
Attempt to open your web browser and enter 192.168.100.1.
I expect to review the logs for any unusual messages. Most of them are irrelevant or only useful to the ISP. You might want to check for any suspicious entries and see if someone else has clarified their purpose.
There is also a display showing signal strength and error counts. It could be helpful to observe how these change when performance varies between slow and fast speeds.
Overall, this isn’t critical. You can’t adjust settings on the modem, and firmware updates aren’t possible since the ISP handles that even after purchase.
The goal is to determine if there’s a problem with the device itself or if the internet connection issue resets when the modem restarts.
