if you overclock your 6700, you don't necessarily need to overclock the motherboard. You can focus on boosting the cpu and it should handle the increased load without requiring a motherboard overclock.

For overclocking with Intel, you require a K at the end of the CPU and a motherboard featuring a Z in its numbering. This means a 6700k with a Z170 board.

The number 6700 is a lock code, but it doesn't specify which motherboard it applies to.
