Do I have enough molex cables?
Do I have enough molex cables?
Hi, I'm trying to figure out what other components might use the molex cables from your EVGA 500w 80+ PSU and case with three fans. Since four cables are available, I'm wondering if the rest of the setup would need additional molex connections. The idea is to have extra cables for things like the HDD, which would require its own set. Let me know if I'm on the right track! Thanks, Nick P.
When a motherboard provides slots for fan connections, it is always preferable to use this method rather than connecting directly to Molex. This allows you to adjust the fan speeds.
You likely have sufficient components. You understand that you can link three fans using a single MOLEX connector. Most modern parts now avoid using MOLEX, opting instead for SATA or power cables. Essentially, it's just a mix of fan controllers, pumps, reservoirs, and fans—so everything should work fine.
Which case scenario applies??
In most instances involving fans, a single Molex connector can be connected. Molex isn't typically used for hard or optical drives anymore—they prefer SATA power connectors (your PSU usually has 4 or 6 of these)
Modern HDDs rely on SATA power connectors. Molex is rarely used now, serving mainly as a versatile power connector. Some users may lack sufficient chassis fan headers on their motherboards and will require molex for the fans. Others might need additional power cables for a GPU and will use a molex-to-6pin adapter. Manufacturers keep including molex in power supplies because it provides a reliable power output without being overly specialized.

everything is generally handled by the PSU. it's up to you on how you wish to connect the. no changes needed
