Do I have a bad processor, or did I make a mistake?
I can't even get my 8700k running fast enough. My cooling fan (Le Grand) is loud but works fine. The RAM tested okay and my CPU runs in Prime95 without problems while it's new. But when I try to speed up, the heat gets insane inside my box. It fails Prime95 at high 80s degrees. I'm using a VCore of 1.25 volts and clocking my CPU to 4.6 GHz. Is this just a bad CPU or am I messing something up?
Apply some thermal paste again. Make sure the heatsink is actually fastened tight; often tightening or loosening it just a little helps stop the temperature from getting too high. If that doesn't fix anything, your best bet might be to buy and install a fresh cooler.
Check how much fixed voltage makes it cool enough while under max load (start around 1.3 volts and move up or down). Next, figure out the highest speed it can run at that voltage without getting unstable. Then pick an offset value so that this exact voltage runs at this exact speed when you switch to dynamic settings.
