Hi everyone. The DNS server can be configured on both your laptop and router. I’m a bit unsure which one actually controls the selection. In your control center, if you set the option to use an external IP address or specify the DNS server directly, it should automatically choose the router’s assigned server?

DNS operates as a hierarchical system. It first checks local resources, then consults your configured DNS server (as set up manually or via DHCP), followed by authoritative and root servers. In short, the server your device uses is defined in its IP settings. On Windows, run 'ipconfig /all' to view available DNS entries. Your router's DNS is tied to DHCP, so when it assigns an IP, it suggests a DNS server you can use. You can change this by manually entering a DNS server on your device.

Manually configuring DNS on the laptop directs it to that specific server. Choosing automatic DNS retrieval means it will use the router’s assigned server. In general, the router’s setting takes priority unless you override it on the laptop, in which case the laptop settings will apply. Updated May 30, 2020 by The_russian
