Hey guys, Ive been using an amd gpu(rx6600xt) for a couple of years, and Im thinking about upgrading and possibly switching to NVIDIA, probably a used 3000 series. However, Im very confused about DLSS compatibility. Is DLSS 3.0 only compatible with the 4000 series? But is 3.5 compatible with the 3000 series? how is that? Ive read that version 3.0 supports frame generation and version 3.5 supports ray reconstruction, but aside from that, is the image quality the same in both? And what the hell are DLSS 3.1 and 3.7? Thanks!

Upscaling is supported on all RTX GPUs via Frame Generation, launched in version 3.0, and it applies to 40 series models only. Avoid confusing DLSS 3.0 with Frame Generation. The numbers refer simply to the version. If you're interested in a particular feature, let me know.

It causes confusion because Frame Gen is promoted with DLSS 3.0. Every DLSS release works with all RTX graphics. Just Frame Generation, which you turn on in game settings, is only supported by RTX 40 models because of hardware limits. The Optical Flow method from Ada Lovelace runs quickly enough to manage the demands of Frame Gen.

With a 3000 series GPU, frame generation can only be achieved using Lossless Scaling and additional mods.

It varies by mods. If you attempt to turn on Frame Gen for Nvidia through game or driver modifications, it won't function properly and won't improve performance. Some mods alter Nvidia libraries to match AMD's versions, which can help. Yes, you can use frame generation tools—they don't rely on the hardware, especially LSFG.

AMD FSR3 Frame Generation can work if the game supports it or needs manual modification. I tested a Forspoken demo to see if it functions, as it was among the earliest FSR3 FG titles.

This setup isn't accurate. You can't run DLSS 3.5 with frame generation in Monster Hunter Wilds beta on a 3070.

The frame generation feature is available only for 40 series GPUs. Because this discussion focused on DLSS, I asked the OP to clarify about the NV version. FSR frame generation works with any GPU and is no longer tied to an upscaler. I don’t know how that game handles it.

Oh... I captured the screenshots, just verified it says exactly the same twice (DLSS and FSRC). *But* it actually mentions DLSS + frame generation for the RTX 40 series. That means it’s likely accurate—can’t rely on NVIDIA Frame Gen on the 3000 series unless you’re using workarounds. You’re right, FSRC tends to look better to me, even though I usually prefer it. But honestly, 9 out of 10 times FSRC gives a cleaner result (no cap, I’m not a fanboy).
