DLC is the problem for PC gaming...
I accidentally landed on a BF4 DLC pack and realized I really need something new to play online. I haven’t bought any DLCs separately for other games before. On my PC, the only purchases I’ve made... Now my back hurts and I immediately regret it. When I click the download button, I wonder if anyone else thinks this kind of DLC has gone too far and isn’t being released anymore. I told myself this was my last purchase, so I’ve shifted focus to getting good games. I’m also diving back into PC gaming from the 90s era—back when DLCs didn’t exist and games came fully packaged with some add-ons. Those were well-made and reasonably priced.
DLC can be seen as a mixed bag—it’s not inherently negative, but it becomes problematic when it’s overpriced. When priced wisely, it offers valuable content that enhances the experience. This highlights EA’s evolving strategy, showing how they’re adapting their approach without relying solely on traditional models like a season pass. Their decision to release free DLC also reflects a shift in how they engage players.
DLC works well when the cost matches expectations or is offered at no charge because the initial release didn’t include it. For instance, Evolve serves as a warning about poor DLC value. Even the base game feels too expensive for its content, but we’ll skip that discussion. Witcher 3 so far shows a better approach to DLC.
It varies. Many titles now include DLC, but some developers create meaningful expansions that go beyond simple skins or weapon packs. I doubt Train Simulator's team handles that kind of work—€2300 for DLCs is a steal at 40% off on Steam right now, haha!
As long as nothing is removed from the game to meet DLC quotas, I’m okay with that. The issue lies with the first day’s DLC and when they strip features or content just to sell it later. If the game grows beyond being self-sufficient, there’s no problem and I’d be happy to support more content.
Skyrim served as a prime illustration of DLC. I believe the issue lies simply with EA being terrible
It's just another frustrating experience with the ROM and Ubisoft DLC...
DLC enhances the experience when it complements the game. If it's merely there to wrap up the story, it falls short.
I own BF4 on PS4 so I can share with friends and we join a busy server where premium players move ahead. This means it usually takes about 20 minutes to enter, which is really slow. We bought the premium version in-store, applied the code, and received a full refund. There are some decent DLCs, but most of it feels overpriced and was just taken out of the game.
