I just rebuilt my computer to clean it and resolve a problem where it wouldn’t start after a restart. Once everything was reassembled, I booted it up and it immediately shut down with a burning smell. After checking all the wires, I found a damaged SATA power connection to my SSD with an exposed wire. I replaced it and the system started working normally again, except for the external drive which still appears as generic. I’ve tried various SATA cables and ports, but nothing seems to fix the issue. Do you think the motherboard is faulty?

Even swapping the wire is unlikely to fix the issue completely. The repair might not be covered under your warranty if you attempted fixes yourself. For electrical problems like damaged wires, it’s best to contact the manufacturer through RMA instead of trying to repair it yourself.

These components are quite outdated, around 2-3 years old. Can I still process a return or replacement? I only changed the cords, not tried any fixes.

Varies by warranty type; some last longer than others. It seems the SATA power supply was the issue. If the cable came with your PSU or motherboard, it might be covered under their warranty—contact their support for details. I once had a CPU fry during my first PC build, so they sent me the whole system for testing. After replacing the CPU and upgrading to a higher-rated PSU, they returned it. I only paid for the shipping cost to them, not back. (I didn’t insure it, and since it was my first build with an older AMD APU, the cost wasn’t too high.)
