Hey everyone, looking for some brainpower to help with our setup! We just got a new PC built for a friend: a 7800x3D Gigabyte 4080S with 32GB DDR5 RAM and a 6000cl30 processor. The display setup is pretty cool—three Dell G2724D monitors at 1440p, one Alienware AW2725DF for gaming, and a status monitor using HDMI for Aida64 data.

Originally we planned to run everything as they came out: three G2724D screens over DP1.4, the AW2725DF over HDMI 2.1, and the status monitor drawing power from the GPU since it’s light. But we realized Dell’s HDMI 2.1 specs don’t match what we expected, especially with the AW2725DF not having a true HDMI 2.1 port. Trying to switch monitors with a DP switch didn’t help much—they’re stuck at 144Hz even on the 360Hz screens.

I’m wondering if we should stick with the current configuration or consider swapping in something better. Should we return the AW2725DF for a more capable model like MSI27QRX, which supports full HDMI 2.1 and has DSC support? Also, does using full HDMI 2.1 really need DSC to push 1440p at 360Hz? That’s something I’m still figuring out.

You can launch the alienware via the igpu, but using it will cause a slight slowdown since it relies on your main GPU.

Fascinating. I hadn't realized you could pass through every AM5 board (we're using the Aorus Elite AX v2 B650) to tap into the 4080S from the motherboard video out. Could try it out. Maybe start with a small status monitor via the iGPU, and lower the triple rates to 144hz by using two DP streams and one HDMI stream, reserving one DP for the 1440p360hz display. Really frustrated I overlooked the edge case with the new HDMI 2.1 definitions and Dell's approach.
