Hey there, I’ve faced some issues with my computer over the past couple of months. I’ve experienced black screens and occasional green flickering from the GPU, along with loud buzzing sounds like a horse whining. This has been happening since I installed the latest Nvidia driver in December. Sometimes it freezes after booting Windows, other times it takes hours or even days to resolve. The only solution is waiting a few minutes before restarting or holding the power button.

I checked the Event Viewer and Maintenance logs, and the codes show a blue screen error: “Windows stopped working correctly – i think.” There’s also a critical error labeled “kernel power event 41 (63).” I tried using DDU, reinstalling the driver, and even had a PC repair shop install Windows, but they noted high CPU temperatures. A few days later the problem returned despite their advice.

I’m aware my PC hasn’t been upgraded recently and hasn’t had its thermal paste changed. About a year ago I used dual monitors and experienced similar crashes—pink or green screens. The only fix I’ve found is removing the GPU, though it still sometimes causes a brief blackout.

My thoughts on the matter: My power supply might be faulty. The GPU power capacitors seem to be failing, possibly due to a video I saw online about someone with the same issue. There’s also a possibility of driver crashes. My hardware specs are: CPU i7-6700K, 16GB DDR4 RAM, Maximus ix code GPU, Asus GTX 1080 A8G, Strix SSD, Samsung 850 EVO 500, and two Be Quiet Dark Rock Pro 3 GPUs. With these details, I really need some guidance.

Begin with cleaning and repasting CPU+GPU. Then keep an eye on temperatures and clocks—your GPU might be aging and struggling to reach previous performance levels. It seems like it’s likely reaching the end of its life after six years...

Have troubleshooted this exact issue on several GPUs, mainly GTX 970s through to the the 1080ti as it's not as common on RTX 20 series and newer. Unfortunately, it's either corrupted drivers or a dead/dying GPU, if DDU and reinstall didn't fix it and with everything you've already tried I'd say it's a dead/dying GPU, sadly there is no fix for it besides replacing the card altogether.

Thanks for your assistance; it’s great to know there’s a fix planned. This card has been working hard for six years without stopping.
