Weird problem. Alt+tab and quick black screens seem to indicate a worldwide resolution adjustment. These displays can also appear when keeping the screen resolution but altering the refresh rate. In this case, it might be a damaged or partially blocked port, since HDMI is a modern connection that doesn’t require screws like older ones. Unless you tested all four ports and none of them behave this way. Or, content compatibility issues could cause it—like HDR enabled but the window doesn’t support it, or something similar.
The display seems to adjust the refresh rate independently. My TV has a game mode viewer that shows the actual refresh rate it's showing. Do you think this is normal? I'm trying to resolve it because I'm running my game at a different resolution than the TV's native settings. For example, when I set the TV to 4K but the game to 1440p, the issue appears. Also, switching from desktop to game causes it to briefly switch between windowed and fullscreen modes, especially at 4K. When GPU scaling is off, the problem only happens during certain transitions. If I change the TV's resolution in Windows settings to match the game's resolution and keep it fullscreen, the issue disappears. The same goes for using a displayport to HDMI adapter—does it help? I usually don't use the HDMI cable, and HDR isn't enabled on either device. Have you experienced this before?
Resolution comparison isn't just about screen size—it's about how the display and graphics card interact. Your setup can show different resolutions depending on settings like Alt+Tab, which switches between fullscreen and windowed modes. If your monitor is set to 4K but the GPU renders in 4K, changes in resolution can happen. Some games react this way, especially if they rely on specific display modes. Monitor port age might also play a role, though it's less likely to be the main issue. Focus on stabilizing the display settings and checking compatible ports.
I kept everything unchanged with the Xbox HDMI cable and the issue didn’t appear. I’ll test it and update this post to check if it works. Thanks! This seems like a solid discovery. Interestingly, after using a DDU 8bpc, the only choice for color format is available, though it offers limited help. It might reduce wait times slightly, but not much. It’s not a major concern since it doesn’t happen during games (which I run on PC). Sometimes fullscreen or maximized windows cause it. Edited November 7, 2025 by filpo
