Hey everyone,
It looks like the very first Witcher title in the series will receive a remake. To be honest, I usually don’t get too pumped about remakes these days, but I haven’t played the original Witcher 1. I’ve only played Witcher 3.
Nonetheless, CD Projekt Red has confirmed that a remake of the initial entry is in progress. The studio’s Head of Studio, Adam Badowski, mentioned during the announcement that creating a remake for the game that launched everything feels like a significant milestone, maybe even surpassing the start of the original’s development.
The new version will be built using Unreal Engine 5, as confirmed on the official website. It’s currently being developed by Polish studio Fool's Theory, with CDPR overseeing the creative direction. Earlier, the project was known by the code name Canis Majoris.
Sources say the game is still in its early stages. We’re all hoping the remake will be worth the wait, even though its release date and platforms haven’t been finalized yet. It will definitely be available on PC.
Adam Badowski shared his thoughts:
“The Witcher marked the beginning for us and CD PROJEKT RED. It was our first project, a major moment back then. To revisit it and bring it to a new generation feels just as important, if not more so.
Working with Fool’s Theory on this is equally thrilling. Their team has deep knowledge of the source material, understands what fans have been eagerly anticipating, and knows how to craft outstanding, ambitious titles. Although we’ll need some time before sharing more details, I’m confident it’s worth the effort.”
Jakub Rokosz, CEO of Fool’s Theory, added:
“I’m delighted that my professional journey has once again brought me together with developers from the days of working on The Witcher 2 and 3. It’s especially meaningful to remake a project so dear to us.”

Official press release summary below.
In line with the 15th anniversary of the debut Witcher game, CD PROJEKT RED has revealed that The Witcher Remake is underway and shared the initial details about the project.
Earlier in October, the studio was discussing a project called “Canis Majoris” during its Strategy Update. The remake will offer a fresh take on the 2007 original — the first title in CD PROJEKT RED’s celebrated RPG series. It will be developed entirely with Unreal Engine 5, utilizing the new tools being created for the upcoming Witcher saga. The project is currently at its very early development phase at Fool’s Theory, a studio focused on role-playing games.
The team includes many experienced developers who previously contributed to The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings and The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. CD PROJEKT RED is fully overseeing the creative process.

I feel a bit conflicted about this situation. On one hand, CDPR seems stuck in a repair phase after their failed Cyberpunk 2077 project, and now they're handing off the remake of TW1 to another group. It's concerning that they're moving a project involving UE5, an engine reportedly known for worse performance issues compared to UE4. Additionally, it's troubling that they're assigning this work to a different team, especially since Fool's Theory has only contributed to a few UE4 titles like Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice and Outriders, both of which have their own set of problems.

It clearly appears to be a damage control PR strategy from CDPR. As I mentioned earlier, I no longer trust the developers at CDPR following the release of CP2077. Therefore, I don't anticipate any miracles from these so-called remakes.
And indeed, UE5 seems to be lagging behind compared to UE4. I believe it's still in the early access phase, which requires significant optimization.
I previously played Outriders through the Xbox Game Pass for PC, so I could at least attempt to play it. The performance was terrible, but the combat and gameplay were decent and somewhat satisfying. My Game Pass subscription ended because I didn't renew it, so I left the game in the middle.
I might consider playing it again in the future.
