I setup steam family sharing recently and noticed that you can't play a friend's shared game if they are playing a game from that list of shared games. Here's a diagram to make things easier to explain: Basically I want to play castle crashers (which I own) and my friend wants to play Trine 2 (from my shared library). As you can see on the left image I cannot play Castle crasher while my friend plays Trine 2 because they are both in the shared library. What would happen if I was to remove Castle crashers from the shared library so that it was only available in my personal library? Would we then both be able to play our separate games because both of our games are no longer in the shared library together? Normally, if the games are in the same shared library and we both want to play a game from the library it would prioritize me and kick the other person off the game. Does this method work? Thanks, Blueprint

You can't run games simultaneously. A single user can access a library at any given time.

You may only access it if both possess it in your personal library. Using one Steam account for multiple games is not allowed.

The games are stored in different libraries, which implies each person can only play one game at a time.

Sure, I get it. If you both have access to the same library, you can remove the game you don’t want and then enjoy your own titles together—like playing Castle Crashers while your friend plays Trine 2 from the shared collection.

Both of you have the game in distinct libraries. Are you certain each of you is launching separate copies, while the Steam shared ones are used?

I possess the sole copy of the game. In the example picture from my post, both libraries on either side belong to my library; the right side merely displays castle crashers removed from my shared library, that's all.

It vanishes when your friend starts playing a game using your account.

Essentially, you have a shared library that your friend has access to. If you remove "Castle Crashers" from it, only you can play it anymore. Meanwhile, "Trine 2" remains in the shared library. So you can still play "Castle Crashers" from your personal copy while your friend plays "Trine 2" from the shared one.

Your shared collection remains yours alone. Whether you or your companion are using a game from your library, others can't access it regardless of the platform. It includes every title you possess, whether shared or not. Removing a specific game from your shared library won't prevent someone else from playing it if they're using a different version in the same account.
