Discussion about network storage issues
I’m still getting familiar with networking and network storage topics, so please accept that as a possibility. I’m just wondering if this setup is realistic. You have two separate computers connected to the same home network, each with its own dedicated NAS. You want your Steam library to download automatically to the NAS location. Then you’d like to install games from that NAS instead of downloading them online. You mentioned you can only use one Steam account at a time, but having the ability to reinstall games would be useful—especially if you switch computers or set up multiple users. With a slower internet connection, this could save a lot of time by avoiding repeated downloads of large game files. Your home network seems faster than your broadband connection, which makes sense. This idea sounds practical, but I’d like to know: does it make sense? Is it technically feasible? What hardware and software would be needed to make it work? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Steam and some other launchers provide a way to configure a network cache, though it’s time-consuming. It would speed up downloads by using your local network instead of relying on Steam servers, but you wouldn’t be able to play games directly from a NAS. You could rethink the idea and set up a local cloud gaming server, with a PC in one room that others can connect to, similar to Stadia.
