Hello everyone! I’m seeking some perspectives on a possible upgrade path. Usually, I refresh my CPUs every five years. I was scheduled for a 13th-gen refresh but ended up with a 10700k after a motherboard failure last year. A friend mentioned he might be interested in a 11900k for a discount, possibly moving to the 12th-gen or newer Zen 4/13th-gen models later this year. While my board works, I recall the 11th-gen wasn’t great—just enough to know. Would you think it’s worth it for PCIe 4 compatibility to keep things future-proof, especially if the price is solid? Or would you prefer to wait and upgrade sooner, which might require adding DDR5 support? I’m mainly focused on gaming and machine learning. Thanks for any thoughts!
It varies by your system. I faced issues with the Gigabyte Z490 board and 11700k, so I swapped it out for better stability. The Gigabyte BIOS isn't up-to-date for the 11th generation and doesn't seem to have any future updates planned. It worked well in the 10th generation. I recommend sticking with what you're familiar with.
PCIe Gen 4 demands compatible motherboards, meaning unless you're using a B560, Z590 or certain Z490 boards, you won't achieve Gen 4 benefits. For long-term adaptability, it's uncertain PCIe Gen 4 will be essential. Unless you require rapid storage speeds, the benefits aren't significant for most users. Your machine's ML workload might justify the 11900K if it supports AVX-512, which is uncommon outside specialized scenarios. In such situations, a budget 11900K remains a solid choice since Intel is phasing out AVX-512 in upcoming consumer chips. The main drawback is that the CPU can become extremely power-hungry, potentially exceeding 300W if you disable power limits while using AVX-512. You'll need a robust board, adequate power supply, and cooling solution.
