Discussion about DDR5 technology
It could be early to discuss DDR5, but I explored some details. Each DIMM supports two channels, so what we call dual channel now can be achieved with just one DIMM. Future builds might use a single DIMM for quad channel, similar to current setups. I’ve always preferred two DIMMs for dual channel performance, and most builders follow that approach to maximize speed. Would a quad channel setup default to dual channels in new builds? It sounds promising, but there’s still much to learn about this emerging technology.
There are two channels available, though it doesn<|pad|> to feel like a different setup compared to the old dual-channel DDR4 configuration, which allowed reading and writing 64 bits at once. The new DDR5 supports 40-bit channels per chip (five chips each with eight bits add up to forty), and it seems some of those bits might include error correction features by default. It’s possible the design aimed for higher capacity per chip and power efficiency by turning off one channel when needed.
