Discussion about 4090 and 12VHPWR voltage issues
System details: processor Ryzen 7 7800x3D, graphics Gigabtye RTX 4090 OC Windforce Mobo, RAM 64GB DDR5, power supply MSI MPG A1000G.
Hey everyone, I understand there isn't a single "right" explanation for why the 4090 might be overheating, except maybe incorrect power connections or voltage issues. Since I'm concerned about losing this investment, I've been keeping an eye on things people are talking about.
For the 12VHPWR cable, when I'm gaming on a 2K monitor it stays within 12.222V to 11.843V. I'll share a photo later. Last night I connected the PC to my 4K TV while playing Hitman (the same game I'm using now at this voltage). The voltage dropped to around 11.73V.
My worry is that with more load on the TV, the card might be under stress. Should I consider upgrading the PSU? I'm aware it's a good one with Japanese components, which is why I chose it.
Appreciate the read and any advice you can offer—I'm trying to figure this out while it's still working.
I've understood the concerns. Voltage itself isn't a problem with the 4090, unlike some older Intel models. The real issues were related to cables that were too thin to handle the current, overheating, and potential damage from bending or poor connections. Power quality mainly came from the PSU, not the card itself. So those voltage worries weren't a factor here.
Playing on a 4090 for almost two years now. This is the final chapter in Cyberpunk at 4K full path tracing.
This update really helps lift my spirits, matching what mine did. Hitman 3 is quite demanding with its new path tracing and other improvements. Thanks for swapping ideas, and knowing it's a different brand makes it even better.
