Discussing Windows XP activation issues
It seems XP primarily requires your product key, not hardware-specific deactivation features.
Because it's been discontinued for a long time, I wouldn't assume the activation servers would still be running. It's unclear whether everyone would have access without a key or not. If issues arise, I'm unsure if forcing activation through other methods would be ethical or legal. I think there might be a provision for "abandonware" in this situation.
Activation servers are still online, the phone functionality remains intact. Updates will be applied automatically. It might be needed to enable XP. Currently, I'm using older titles. I need a way to start something without updating or going online. Sounds silly to use XP, but GOG offline installers work well for classic games like Far Cry, F.E.A.R., and Unreal Tournament. EAX is turned off in F.E.A.R., but the game still runs. If anyone can fix EAX for surround sound, that would be great. Switching from an E8500 to a Q9650 could be fun, and I won’t worry about updating XP. Just power it on and run it. It seems six hardware tweaks might reactivate it. I avoid online play as a daily driver; some older titles need Flash Player, which isn't available with Windows 10 due to security concerns. XP works for downloading games, but Flash is a hassle. Chrome can handle it in the old version. Windows 10 is fine for most things now. At least they tied activation to the hardware. It’s a good reason to dislike DRM. There are also XP-only titles, and I might manage without them. If I can’t, I’ll use the phone to trigger activation. The service is still functional. Just answer '1' when asked about the number of computers—there’s only one. You might lie if needed. I’ll try a CPU swap to see how it goes.
