Adjusting it for optimal results disables all the visual effects that need very little GPU power to show. Enabling them improves the look. If your system is old or you're using a 64-bit version on an Intel Atom chip, this change can make a big difference. For most modern games, it won't noticeably change performance, especially in full screen or exclusive titles where compositing is turned off by default.
