I've saved my upgrade on my current Windows 8.1 Pro setup. I'm wondering if it's possible to perform a fresh installation of Windows 10 cleanly, or if I'm stuck with the upgrade path. This is mainly because past upgrades weren't reliable, and I'd prefer to manually transfer all my data. Have anyone experienced any problems during upgrades from Windows 8.1?

I also have an older PC running Windows 7 Professional that I didn't reserve for an upgrade. I'd really need to disassemble it and rebuild it, which is why I'm reaching out. Since I didn't set up a backup on that machine, do I still receive it? Also, I'm not keen on using the old HDD anymore—it's in poor condition. If I purchase a new SSD, can I switch from the old HDD to the new one during installation? If yes, I'd just discard the old drive, which is concerning. Ideally, I'd like to turn this into an HTPC, thanks!

Upgrade version 8.1 to 10 using a clean install of Microsoft ISO from their website.

Yes, you can perform a fresh setup after the upgrade. Just ignore the key prompt during installation. 2. No, you receive the upgrade only when you properly install Windows 10, and it remains linked to the device's components.

After the upgrade, you can perform a kind of reset that refreshes everything and is almost perfect, though not fully clean. It's similar to factory resetting a phone in Windows 10. 2. You can move the operating system from the hard drive to the SSD yourself, and you can keep a W10 copy if you update it correctly.
