Discussing Unifi Switch Aggregation with RSTP challenges
Hi everyone—my goal is to turn off RSTP on certain ports on my Unifi Switch Aggregation. These ports are causing delays when connecting to the network because of the time it takes for devices (like Windows 11 clients) to wake up or restart. In class, my professor recommended enabling Spanning Tree Port Fast, which works with Cisco equipment. Can I do the same on my Ubiquiti switch?
I understand your point. By default, Rapid Spanning Tree often goes through Discard, Learn, Forward which takes just a few seconds to a couple of tens. A standard spanning tree takes around 45 seconds. On Unifi, the process isn't exclusive to Cisco and adjusting port settings can help resolve this issue, though someone might have better insight.
Ubiquiti switches feature a brief guard timer for spanning tree blocking, typically lasting a few seconds. They don’t support disabling spanning tree hold timers individually per port, unlike some Cisco devices. In the controller, you can’t disable these settings as easily. If you only require one VLAN on a port, assigning it untagged might improve performance. Use consistent terminology for "Untagged" and "Native" across both brands. Recent firmware updates have caused issues with Switch Aggregation on Ubiquiti, so consider updating to an older version. Manually set port speeds instead of relying on auto-negotiation, as that can also introduce problems.
