You won’t lose your Windows 8.1 activation after the update. You can still use it, and you’ll be able to return to Windows 8.1 if you wish.

When 10 appears, you'll be able to upgrade. But if you need to revert to 8, you'll have to reset and reinstall. Your current key remains valid. However, returning to 8 will require an upgrade to reach 10 since the 8 key isn't compatible for installation. It's better to keep using 8 until the final version. If you wish to use 10, consider testing it in a virtual machine or installing it on a separate partition.
