I was looking up information on Google about compatibility between 8th gen processors and motherboards. My motherboard has failed, and I need a replacement. It’s a 6th gen i7, so I’m wondering if it can run on a board with the same socket model I’ve seen before.

they don't work together even with the same connector, you must use a 100/200 series board for the 6th generation Intel (Z170, B250, etc).

The 6th generation processor works with any motherboard featuring an LGA1151 connector and a 100/200 series chipset. These CPUs aren't compatible with boards that use the 300 series socket.

Only models from 8th and 9th generation support z370/z390; 6th generation boards are compatible with 100 and 200 series.

It seems he likely misread the final part of the sentence. The chipsets from the 300-series aren't compatible. Let's hold off on clarifying until he confirms, thanks for checking the details—I wasn’t able to locate anything useful in Google either, possibly due to incorrect keywords.
