Discussing the latest hardware and software updates.
Hi, I've collected all the parts for my build except the operating system. Before, I had a HP desktop with Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit installed. I'm not keen on spending $100 on the OS for my new PC, so I'm looking for alternatives. If I use the same Windows version on my new machine, can I activate it using the product ID from my old HP (the one listed in system properties)?
It might work with the previous key. You could reach out to Microsoft to clarify that you're setting up the installation on a fresh device, and the older one is no longer active.
I'm still unsure about it because I might not have the exact same version of Windows. There could be compatibility problems with the software since the OS is likely a mass-produced release sold to companies. Has anyone tried this before? If not, does the $100 price tag justify getting a new Windows 8.1?
Typically, entering the key works without problems. If it causes issues, reach out to Microsoft for assistance.
Laptop keys often pose challenges because they're attached to the motherboard. However, certain individuals have reportedly managed to bypass Microsoft's security.
