I own an Arris SURFboard 32 x 8 DOCSIS 3.0 Modem connected to the NETGEAR XR300 Gaming Router via coaxial cable. We have a gigabit plan, but only receive about 50MB over Wi-Fi and 500MB over Ethernet. A technician from Comcast visited and claimed we lacked a suitable modem, but it’s possible. The device might not be fully compatible with the router.

There are various factors to consider: 1. Your modem must be compatible with Gigabit 2. Your router should also support Gigabit 3. The cables require Gigabit capability (Cat 5e or superior) and must be in good condition (avoid sharp bends). 4. Ensure your computer's network card supports Gigabit 5. For Wi-Fi, it needs 802.11ac (Wi-Fi 5) or higher; otherwise, you won't achieve full bandwidth over Wi-Fi due to interference from multiple devices.

The modem isn't compatible with Gigabit speeds on the Comcast network. You'll need a Docsis 3.1 model instead. Don't waste time disputing this—Comcast will just tell you to try harder. The older 32-channel Docsis 3.0 units rely on the Puma 6 chip, which has known problems. Arris is facing lawsuits over the SB6190 and an Intel error. Based on what I know, most Docsis 3.1 devices use Broadcom chips and are generally reliable.
