Hey everyone! I'm just starting out with PC building and recently got the MSI B550-A Pro motherboard. I didn't know it came with RGB support, so I was hoping to save money while still getting some cool RGB lighting later. My friend surprised me with extra cash, and now I'm thinking about adding RGB fans—specifically three 3 Phanteks SK120 DRGB PWM units. With that in mind, the board has two 3-pin 5V (JRAINBOW) headers and one 12V 4-pin (JRGB) header. Since I'm still learning about RGB and PCs, I'm wondering if I can still control the fans' colors using the board's ports or if I need a dedicated RGB fan controller. Thanks for your help!
Don't fret about the jrgb or jrainbow names. The 4-pin headers suit 12V RGB, while the 3-pin ones work for 5V RGB. Both are managed through Mystic Lighting.

However, brands like Corsair, NZXT, and some Lian Li products have their own dedicated RGB ecosystems and tools. For instance, Corsair provides a controller that connects to the motherboard's internal USB header. You control the lighting using Corsair's software, but you can't use the motherboard's native RGB software. You'll still need the ICE (Integrated Controller) software. It’s wise to stick with one ecosystem if possible, as mixing systems later can cause issues. Corsair’s setup is considered strong, though it comes at a higher cost. If you seek variety from other companies, opt for products compatible with MSI's system.
