I'll check when it's best to update your BIOS. Your motherboard is a GIGABYTE B650 AORUS ELITE AX V2 with a 9800x3D chipset. You plan to use a 9800X3D graphics card. Should I install the CPU first, then flash the BIOS through the motherboard button? Or should I install Windows and the CPU before flashing? Do I need to flash the BIOS separately from installing everything else? Also, is there a difference between these approaches? Thanks for the details!

I manually update it once I complete a post-test and verify that everything starts properly before I set up Windows.

Remember the B650 may require a BIOS that doesn’t support the 9800X3D feature. Updating via the BIOS Flash button is advised. You can perform this with or without any additional software, and it works regardless of your setup. Just connect the CPU power cable and motherboard power cable if you choose to update without installing anything else.

The OP's B650 could include a BIOS that doesn't initially support the 9800X3D feature.

This observation is valid and remains a genuine chance within the life cycle.

The main issue is attempting to install everything from scratch and encountering rejection due to compatibility problems with the B650 motherboard and its current BIOS. Updating the BIOS isn't urgent but should be done after setting up the PC or once basic software is installed. Keeping the BIOS updated is beneficial, though it doesn’t need frequent changes—annual updates are usually sufficient unless there are critical issues. Prioritize BIOS updates alongside Windows and driver installations.

The motherboard allows flashing BIOS without a CPU installed in the socket. Refer to the manual for guidance, which usually involves formatting a USB drive as FAT32 or exFAT, extracting the BIOS from the root directory of the USB (the file might need a specific naming). Insert the USB into the designated slot for flashing and press the corresponding button on the board. It may take a few minutes for the BIOS to load and program. Alternatively, you can attempt to install the BIOS after the CPU, cooler, and graphics card are installed—initial startup might take several minutes, so be patient. If the system doesn’t start within five minutes, the CPU might not be recognized. Once it does, navigate to BIOS, choose “Update BIOS,” select your USB drive, and load the BIOS from there.
