Hi everyone, I'm trying to simplify my home network which is currently a mix of different gear. I have an HP Procurve switch with 24 ports and a built-in 2.5GB switch for four computers connected to it. My Wi-Fi is managed by a Linksys router running OpnWRT. Most of my devices—Apple TVs, Roku, desktops, and anything with RJ45 ports—are already wired. I'm considering adding a cable modem, Ubiquity ER-4 EdgeRouter, and a ProCurve switch via SFP to streamline things further. I also have four HP SFP SX modules and J4858C adapters available. Would connecting the EdgeRouter to the ProCurve through an SFP make sense? I only need a FO cable to link them, right?
I’m keeping things straightforward for your home setup. Just connect the modem to the switch, then link all your devices—including APs—to the switch. It’s simple, gigabit speeds aren’t necessary unless you’re dealing with very long distances. If you’re just having fun, go ahead and drop it. From a practical view, aim for clean, minimal configuration. You’ll need extra ports only if you have many wired devices. A single check confirms the modem should get internet and have gigabit out—just plug it in and see. No need for a 2.5GB switch unless you’re on a very slow connection or a really long cable.
Cable modem lacks routing features, so a router is needed. I understand your point about the SFP; copper connections are more affordable and straightforward. The 2.5GB switch is intended for the three devices that actually have 2.5GB Ethernet cards—your gaming PC, editing PC, and Unraid box.
It seems fine with what you have. I wouldn’t bother seeking the SFP connection since it remains gigabit capable and can be accessed via Ethernet. Unless you’re running out of GbE ports on the ER-4… What makes this AP unique? It’s priced below MSRP, already in your hands, etc.?
When expecting the ER-4 to apply QoS SmartQueue without hardware support, confirm the maximum SmartQueue throughput won’t limit your internet performance. For example, my ER-X reached about 200mbps under max settings, making 400mbps downfeasible but only 20mbps up—useful for those scenarios. My understanding of the ER-X is the only input I can offer beyond ensuring downstream devices don’t exceed 1gbps per port on your 2.5 Gbps switch.
I’m looking for something reliable right now. I completely abandoned the original plan except for changing my HP. I just got an Ubiquity Dream Machine Pro, two uniFi 6+ APs, and two POE injectors. I’m hoping this works well for a while.
