Discussing my network experiment Analyzing performance and results Sharing insights from the test
I’ve been testing a setup with 10g networking hardware and a 10g card on one server. It’s mostly for experimentation, but the fast storage is available for use. I’ve tried different approaches—playing games like Runescape alongside running boinc tasks using these drives. The results are decent but not as strong as I hoped. Have others experimented with this? What performance levels have you achieved over the network?
Well, unless I'm wrong, 1gbps equals about 125MB per second, and 10gbps is roughly 1.25GB per second. I’m not very familiar with the extra bits, but if you can check for full capacity using three SSDs on each machine—each handling around 425MB/s read/write (good SATA 3 drives) or two with more than 650 read/write—you might be able to confirm saturation.
it is built straightforwardly from one device to another without any switch; both machines use two networking cards, making one function as a connection point. Currently it works with a WD black drive, which seems fine, though I can experience slowdowns if it gets overloaded. I’m not sure whether the issue lies in the network or the storage drive, since I don’t rely heavily on the HDD for anything beyond basic backup. In the future I plan to switch to an SSD, which might be beneficial someday, but right now it’s just enjoyable.
Many elements can influence performance. A direct 10Gb connection between clients doesn’t guarantee maximum speed. Where your limitation lies, you may need to adjust settings to improve throughput. For consumer SATA spinning disks in a RAID 5 setup, speeds around 200-250MB/s are typical.
hdds reaches peak performance near 140MB/s at about 7200 rpm. I haven’t tried any 10k rpm drives or checked their behavior closely, but I’d estimate a maximum around 180MB/s. For the best outcome with your drive, aim for over 125MB/s—this should give your HDD the optimal conditions if it exceeds that threshold.
I achieve 80 MB/S during gameplay and while boinc, which means it's working well. Additionally, I can monitor the adapter settings, and the data transfer appears to be significant through the main port rather than limited by the 1G connection, so everything seems fine.
