Discussing MSI versus ASRock BIOS updates and flashing.
They had to adjust the BIOS in stages—P3.40, then P5.40, finally P5.80—to make the ASRock B350 Pro4 work with Ryzen 3rd gen. The second friend wants to upgrade an MSI B450 Tomahawk Max for the same Ryzen version. On the Tomahawk’s support page there’s no clear instruction about mandatory updates before proceeding. It seems updating directly to the latest version might be sufficient, but it’s best to confirm with the manufacturer’s guidance.
The response clarifies the situation by pointing out the differences between BIOS versions. It explains that updating directly to 7C02v1E won't provide support for Zen 2, while upgrading to 7C02v19 is necessary for compatibility with the 3000 series CPU.
The MSI max board comes with Zen 2 built-in right from the start. No additional updates required.
I understand where the mix-up happened. The support page for the non-max version is clear now. Appreciate the assistance!
