Hi everyone, I have a brief inquiry about modifying my laptop. Can I connect an MPCIe to USB C card and use the USB C port with a docking station that supports displays and peripherals? The card model I’m considering is similar to the one from Sybausa (https://www.sybausa.com/index.php?route=...uct_id=900). I’m new to PC building and trying to upgrade my old Lenovo Z580 into a full desktop with a flexible docking setup. Thanks for your assistance!
Sure, you can utilize it, though it won’t support Thunderbolt. What’s the purpose? It doesn’t have enough ports for your needs.
It has sufficient ports. However, I prefer avoiding frequent HDMI cable disconnects whenever I switch between my office laptop and personal one at my desk. I’m evaluating a Lenovo hybrid USB-C/USB-A docking station, though the documentation indicates it doesn’t support HDMI output. Another option is a KVM switch where one port connects to the Lenovo Z580 and the other goes to a USB C hub that stays active. When I need to link my office laptop, I’ll use the USB C port. This seems practical and manageable. It does require buying extra gear and adding wiring.
There’s only one way to link the screen besides using HDMI or VGA. USB-C isn’t special unless it connects to the GPU, otherwise it won’t show anything. A KVM also requires a display input, so you’ll still need to connect a monitor cable to the laptop.
