You're looking at a powerful setup with a 9800x3D and RTX 4080, aiming for the 5090 when components arrive. On an ASRock X670E RPro, this configuration is solid but consider upgrading to the X870 for better performance and future-proofing.

It should work just fine, probably. Motherboards aren't usually the main factor for speed, and your PCIE 5.0 slot suggests you can get the intended performance. Just verify your power supply can handle the load—it tends to be a big card, especially with models from brands like MSI or ASRock.

Asrock produces quality components, not just board models. They’ve created strong and impressive products such as the HDV/M.2 and Pro rs series, which many motherboards are built around. A motherboard’s role isn’t to determine success or failure—it’s about providing sufficient power for the CPU. With this board, you can easily run an overclocked 9800x3d alongside a solid b650 board without issues.

For simplicity, choose the 670 instead of the 870 if you don’t require its advanced options.

There’s little need to upgrade to x870. A 5090 also works fine for 4K without issues—save some cash. Upgrading makes sense only if your current setup can’t handle the games or apps you want.

To add a bit more on this, a 4090 is there as well and even used makes it better value as the 5090 (at MSRP where there is the biggest gap cause retails can vary widely) it comes with a 25% price increase(again at MSRP cause for retail now you cna find them for like 3k to 5k depending on the country, retailer and model) for an, at average, 25 to 35% more performance (depends on the game and or workload) I dont disagree that the 4080 is still more than sufficient but if the OP wants a 5090 or rather an upgrade so badly the only real advice to save some money is getting a used 4090 as you might find them for 1700 or under (price not set on stone as used sellers can be quite stupid with pricing)

Only when the devices you want to use perform adequately should you consider upgrading

I completely understand your point and that’s why I mentioned this as a note or limitation. It means the guidance is only valid if OP wants an upgrade, no matter what card they still have. It really depends on the game and resolution, but generally I’m in agreement.
