Seeking suggestions for several motherboards suitable for an Apple G5 case. You’re considering these options: 1. MSI Msi x99 Krait edition – great black and white design, no SLI needed. 2. Gigabytes Z390 AORUS Pro – includes built-in Wi-Fi, a nice feature. 3. Gigabytes z390 Aorus Ultra Pro Wifi – also comes with Wi-Fi. 4. Gigabyte z490 UD AC WiFi – modern build but might be overkill. 5. Asus Prime Z490A – latest model, but probably too many choices for your needs. I’m leaning toward the Gigabyte Z390 AORUS Pro if forced, otherwise the Z490 UD AC would be a solid pick.

Select the CPU first—X99 Z390 and Z490 aren't compatible in the same range. All support DDR4, but only the Z490 is compatible with the 10th generation i7.

I might be approaching this the wrong way. I'm really new to the latest hardware. My setup is a Dell XPS 730X with an i7-990X, and we're in 2008. Picking a newer CPU feels tough enough, but the options in the current Intel market are overwhelming.

The upcoming Ryzen processors are expected to launch in roughly two weeks, surpassing Intel in all metrics. It makes sense to hold off until then, as Intel is unlikely to offer competitive alternatives for another year or so. While you wait, consider doing some research.

This influences the rest of the components since it relates to the MSI X99 Krait line—the only platform supporting older LGA 2011-3 (Haswell-E and Broadwell-E) processors and compatible with Xeon chips. It started with Skylake and doesn’t accept newer LGA versions. Overclocking is limited to eight cores (5960X), as Intel disabled 6000 CPUs in this socket to address a vulnerability. For single-thread tasks, Z390 and Z490 models offer improved performance. The system itself remains decent for its era, but CPU options now hold less importance.

Gigabyte Z390 Pro was highly regarded for its strong VRM at the time on a mid-range board priced around $200. If you aim to push Intel’s flagship CPUs here—like the 9900K and its variants—without overheating or needing extra fans, this model is ideal.

Gigabyte BIOS configuration can be tricky for newcomers; understanding where settings are placed is essential. However, familiarity comes from experience with older boards like the 990X.

Z390 Pro Wifi: unless you relocate the machine or lack Ethernet access, WiFi offers no benefit. Wired connections provide speed and reliability.

The remaining components stay similar to the Pro model.

Z490 UD AC raised concerns due to its weaker VRM, limiting overclocking beyond 10GHz. It’s best paired with high-end memory (e.g., 10900F at 3600MHz) for performance gains. The board supports memory overclocking, but this requires a compatible chipset.

Just a note, I didn't mention that the Z490 remains the sole platform supporting new CPUs (11th gen) possibly next year. A shift in microarchitecture might boost its per-core performance ahead of the fat Skylakes, but don't count on efficiency improving much—since it's still built on 14nm, a 11th-gen 10-core setup won't perform well with a Z490-A when overclocked. Rumors also hint that the 11th gen could reach 8 cores again, so we'll keep an eye on that."
