Discussing Fallout 4 nexus mods
It’s been a long time since I worked with nexus mods. When the internal system launched for Fallout 4, I stopped because many features weren’t included—like the fenn sheriff’s department. I spent over eleven hours downloading the only collection that had it, and now I own 517 mods. The idea was to make the game function properly instead of just causing crashes. But one error popped up: a single message saying a mod loaded too late. How do I fix this? I expected the load sequence to be set up beforehand, but maybe it wasn’t. What kind of issues might I face? How can I resolve them?
Additional information: the file indicates a delay in loading main.cpp(269). It suggests checking the plug-in preloader loading method, though the terminology is unclear. Looking for beginner resources or simple explanations might help. Updated March 23, 2023 by Bombastinator
Hey there. That sounds like a lot of work. I’d remove all the extra tools and start fresh. Go with Mod Organizer 2 instead of Vortex or Nexus Mod Manager—they’re really hard to organize manually. You can grab Mod Organizer 2 from the Skyrim SE Nexus, but it’s a standalone app that supports any Bethesda game (most of them and several others). Here’s the link: https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspeciale.../mods/6194.
If you’re after a solid setup, try The Midnight Ride for a more robust install—just don’t overdo it with all the recommended mods. It only needs bug fixes: https://themidnightride.github.io/index.html
Some mods need to be read carefully; Buffout 4 is the main one since the installation involves some manual steps. Or you can skip the whole process and just add the mods you actually want, along with their dependencies.
For Fens Sheriff’s Dept, it’s a standalone DLC that works with the base game and all DLCs: https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/68276. It’s set in Downtown Boston, so if you notice performance problems there, consider adding PRP too—this fixes broken precombine meshes, which are a big cause of stuttering in Boston. https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/46403
PRP also needs the Unofficial Fallout 4 Patch: https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/4598.
Load them in this order: UF4P → Fens Sheriff’s Dept → PRP last, so precombines stay intact.
Also, avoid using the auto-sorting “LOOT” feature in Vortex or MO2—it usually creates more problems than it helps, especially with Fallout 4.
Before reading your response, I opened the nexus page in Edge (the standard browser on Windows 11). I clicked a few buttons, and it functioned somewhat. The game displayed in full screen, but my mouse movement was limited to a central area. I thought I could play this way without crashing the system, since all non-essential parts had keyboard shortcuts. It seems the issue might relate to default screen sizes configured at startup. There are many resolutions now—my monitor is 4K instead of the previous one. I’ll experiment a bit and let you know what happens.
I adjusted the resolution to 1080p but encountered the same issue once more. Frustrating. I'm experimenting with another mod manager setup…
