Uncertain about this choice, sorry if it’s not ideal. I’m weighing whether to upgrade to a 5600X now or hold off. I was planning that upgrade when it launched but got stuck searching and eventually decided to wait for the latest CPUs. Recently I’ve been reconsidering. My setup is an AMD 1700x with custom water cooling, a 480mm EK radiator, and a block ASUS Croshair VI Radeon 7 GPU (the red anodized anniversary model works well). It has 16 GB RAM and multiple NVMe SSDs and hard drives. I mainly play sightseeing games at 5120x1440 and don’t need top frame rates unless it’s consistently above 60 FPS. I also do some photo editing, but that’s not the main concern. Should I go for a new 5800X/5800X 3D now (maybe add more RAM) or wait for the next generation and upgrade the motherboard and RAM? Mostly I’m seeking advice from others as I’ve exchanged many pros and cons with them. Thanks!

Did you make sure that the crosshair VI hero supports a Ryzen 7 5800X? A quick check of their product page shows that official support goes to 300 series. You might consider a Ryzen 9 3900X instead, and a used one at that. The value is actually pretty good on those. As for waiting until next generation, we're not really sure what the value will be but usually the release of a new generation is just another reason to hunt for good prices on the previous generation (depending on how thrifty of a buyer you are)

You might consider a Ryzen 9 3900X instead, and a used one at that. The value is actually pretty good on those. A beta version exists to back Ryzen 5000. However, as mentioned by others, unless higher performance is required, an upgrade isn't necessary.

I transitioned from Zen 2 to Zen 3 and it was quite an obvious upgrade. Zen 3 behaves very differently from Zen 2. They are solid processors. You won't have to deal with chipset drivers or power plans anymore. If you were using a 5800X, its speed would increase to 5050MHz when optimized, which alone is a significant improvement over your current max. My 5900X reaches 550MHz higher than my 3600XT for example.

My personal experience with the first-gen Ryzen was quite slow; you’ll notice a noticeable improvement with newer designs.
