Hi, I see you're looking for a campaign in Civ V that doesn't require DLC. There are some solid story modes available on the Steam Workshop that fit what you're after—just search for "Civ V Story Mode" or similar titles, and you should find options that are free to play.

Lower the challenge level. If you struggle with Settler, a TBS might not suit your taste.

I'm having trouble with the campaign in Prince. I'll lower the difficulty settings. Still, I usually manage to beat the AI in single-player most of the time.

The game improves greatly with Brave New World. You can get it for a discount on Steam if you have time to wait.

Vanilla Civ V is definitely not great, though the game itself is solid and I've enjoyed the skirmishes. I explored many Steam mods, but most need DLC expansions like Gods and Kings or Brave New World to be truly satisfying. Those mods are impressive, but the base game is what it was meant to be.

Pre-orders are available for Civ 6. To access certain DLCs quickly and affordably, you might consider trading. This is the approach I take when I really want to play a game intensely after sales end.
