Discussing boosting an i7 5820K with turbo boost.
Hello,
I’ve finally managed to overclock my i7 5820K and had a few questions about turbo boost. Should I keep it on or off during the process? Also, does MSI’s Enhanced Turbo require Turbo Boost to function?
Thanks,
Aquation
I think it's mostly fine to keep it on. I've done both with my 3930k X79 and now with the 5820k X99. This setup has been optimized since its release in late 2014.

I also don't see a need to turn on "enhanced" unless you're skipping standard Turbo Boost. If you're not using it, I'm not sure enhanced would help. I can't confirm for sure because I haven't tested it. Either way, your CPU tuning should remain similar whether you adjust these two settings or not, depending on the multipliers chosen.
enhanced turbo allows all cores to operate at their maximum multiplier instead of reducing clock speeds when more cores are active. You can disable turbo if you're overclocking. c-states will lower clock speeds if the CPU is under light use. Should I keep turbo off for overclocking? Also, does enhanced turbo require an Intel Turbo Boost to function?
I have turbo boost turned on for every core on my 5820k OC'd machine. Keeping it on should work well. It seems to match what ASUS does with their Enhanced Turbo setting. They note that when using more cores, the boost multiplier decreases. With just 1 or 2 cores, the actual speed stays higher than with 3 or more cores. I have an ASUS equivalent with Enhanced Turbo enabled, and my cores are all set to 4.4GHz. At that speed, all six cores run at 4.4Ghz instead of just a few.
I have turbo boost turned on for all cores on my 5820k OC'd machine. I’d keep it enabled. It seems to be similar to ASUS’ setup (don’t care the brand). The idea is that with more cores used, the boost multiplier decreases. If I’m using just 1 or 2 cores, the actual speed is higher than with 3-6 cores. I have the ASUS equivalent with Enhanced Turbo enabled too. My cores are set to 4.4GHz, so at that speed all six will run at 4.4Ghz, not just one or two.
Hello,
Everything is merging and I’m still confused . Could you help me with these points?
1. Should I keep turbo boost on when overclocking?
2. Is turbo boost necessary for MSI Enhanced Turbo to function properly?
Thanks,
