So I’m building a Ryzen 5 5600G. I wanted something upgrade-friendly, solid audio, and decent rear connections. I started with a B550m Pro4 because it felt like a good deal (good VRM, nice features, affordable price). But then I noticed it lacks BIOS flashback support, which I think is important for future upgrades—I might need to change BIOS later if things get messy.

I’m considering MSI B550m Pro-VDH Wifi, which has everything I need plus WiFi, but it’s pricier. There’s also the Gigabyte B550m DS3H, which covers all my requirements except that its SATA port faces upward and could be blocked by a large graphics card.

At first I thought B550m was a solid choice for upcoming models, but now I’m worried about future socket changes—especially since Zen3+ might use a completely different connector. The B450m is still on my radar because it’s similar in price, and I could get better mobos there. If I skip PCIe 4.0 for the GPU and storage, maybe I can go back to B450m. It would let me upgrade later when new Zen generations come out, even if the socket changes. I’m open to spending up to what the Pro VDH Wi-Fi costs as a reference.

They are among the worst boards available... The B450 works with all Ryzen generations on the AM4 platform. In reality, it backs more CPUs than the B550 (though the extra features apply mainly to older Ryzen models). If you manage to get the MSI B450 TOMAHAWK MAX II, go for it. The MSI B450 Gaming Plus MAX is also decent but requires a BIOS update for the latest Zen 3 CPUs.

These are the lowest quality boards without heatsinks for the VRMs. They won’t handle power for your 6-core CPU well. As I mentioned earlier, they’re not a good choice.

Ideally all AMD chipset covers every generation, but AMD set this boundary for marketing reasons. A BIOS flashback is helpful only if your system lacks a compatible CPU. The B550 Pro4 stands out with excellent features at a reasonable price. The B450 works too, though some boards don’t support full 2 M.2 PCIe (only SATA on the second one).

I’m not aware of any board at this price point with Pro 4 and flashback functionality. It would be helpful to look for alternatives or consider other features that matter most.

Sorry for the delayed reply, you likely already decided. The bios flashback isn't essential—just use it once when you first got the board with an unsupported CPU. After fixing it, you won't need that again. Including a flashback feature will take up extra space on the board.
