Hello, I just got the Ryzen 5 5600x and am planning to boost its performance. I heard it can reach up to 4.7ghz, but I’m not sure about the right voltage settings. Right now it’s running at 4.2ghz with auto voltage. Should I increase the frequency to 4.7 while keeping the voltage at auto, or should I manually adjust the voltage? Here’s what I have: CPU, AMD Ryzen 5 5600x, cooler Arctic liquid freezer ii 240mm, MSI B550M motherboard, Corsair Vengeance 32GB DDR4-3600 RAM, GTX 1070, M.2 Western Blue 1TB, EVGA 80+ GOLD 750W PSU, and Lian Li Lancool II case.
4.7 isn't a fixed setting, so no single voltage guarantees that performance. It's like a chance with silicon—everyone needs to experiment on their own CPU to see what works. A 4.7 speed would be nice, but it's not assured. I won't suggest using auto voltage. Edited November 8, 2020 by Fasauceome
Auto is fine, but aim for around 4.5 for a reliable experience.
The chip is quite recent, and few people discuss its overclocking performance. I noticed Optimum Tech employs 1.24v at 4.6GHz for the 5900X model. You might experiment with this setting at 4.5GHz to check stability and temperature. Fine-tune the vcore if needed. Just be careful not to rely on auto-vcore during overclocking.
A few reviewers confirmed a score of 4.7 is secure, though they're still pending real testing from silicon on the bins. Keep in mind that Zen 2 performance drops significantly above 1.3V, so I wouldn't go beyond that for regular use until more independent tests are done.
Good for you... It's not often you hear about people that want to reduce their CPU's performance. The 5600X is already tuned to be at or extremely near its limits out of the box, with an automatic boosting system that takes it right to the edge of stable clocks. There is no reason to "overclock" it unless you have an extremely overkill cooling system, (far beyond any AIO is capable of) or you're really just wanting to reduce the performance instead of increase it.
Successfully achieved a score of 4.8, though the actual benchmark was slightly lower. It might have been due to errors in my calculations.
I recall it's been some time since your last update, but I thought it was worth sharing what I've learned so far. I successfully achieved stable performance at 4.7GHz across all cores, operating at 1.29375V, with maximum temperatures reaching 60°C for the die and 72°C for the CCX on an Asus Strix x570 Gaming-e. In my testing, I reached 4.775GHz all cores at 1.3675V, though I never hit 4.8GHz. When it comes to overclocking benefits, there are several factors to consider. First, variable clocks and power modes introduce significant delays, particularly under multithreaded tasks. Second, you can push clocks beyond the advertised numbers using lower voltages, which reduces heat and noise. PBO can boost clock speeds on a few cores and improve scores in short single-threaded apps or older games, but it requires much higher voltages—my X5600 needs over 1.43V to hit 4.85GHz—and leads to much higher temperatures, causing lower sustained clocks. My take is that PBO offers a simple way to gain a performance edge, but manual overclocking gives you better control over temperatures and fan noise, along with more consistent results.
