I've started discussing several options for upgrading my current setup. I'm considering replacing the CPU, motherboard, and RAM, as I'm still using DDR3. I'm weighing the i5 10400f with 16 GB or RAM plus a B560 motherboard versus a 12400f with 16 GB RAM and a 660 PLUS board, all within a $310 budget. The price gap between LGA 1200 and LGA 1700 boards is noticeable, and the CPU prices differ by about $30. Since gaming is my main focus, I'm curious which option would be best for performance or value. Any recommendations?

If it's true, then the second choice is the best path.

I don't have information on prices for 12th generation products.

I understand. The prices listed for your New Egg cart are clear, but I’m still unsure if $70 fits your budget, particularly with your GTX 970.

For longer-lasting performance, I recommend the 12th generation. Unless your setup includes an RTX 3070 or RX 6700XT or higher, you probably won’t feel a noticeable gap in most titles, since those limitations are already present. If you own a top-tier graphics card or play games that demand heavy CPU usage—such as competitive shooters, strategy games, and similar titles—opt for the 12th generation instead.

Unless the $74 price change is crucial for your decision, I’m confused about why this is being asked.

I wasn't aware of the significant variation between the 12th and 10th generation CPUs in the 400 series, particularly given their comparable specifications.

It focuses on a 20% gain in gaming speed followed by a 30-40% increase for most productivity work. The 12400F offers better performance compared to the 8 core 10700F and is closer to the 8 core 10700F than the 10400F.

I’m considering purchasing a 94 dollar b660m motherboard from ASUS instead of the previous 140 dollar model. I don’t think I need the more expensive option. Also, I’m not hoping for major performance improvements since my current setup uses a 970 and this card is already at its limits.
