I have 64GB of DDR4 RAM, but after three days of my PC running, it's using around 50% even when idle. I've reinstalled Windows multiple times, including a fresh build. I disabled Smart Access Memory and am still trying to identify the cause of the RAM leak. My system includes a Ryzen 7 5800X, an ASRock Steel Legend X570 board, four 16GB Corsair RGB Pro SL sticks, an RX 6700X, RGB fans, and several software programs like iCUE, NZXT Cam, Steam, etc. I'm trying to figure out what's going on.
Open the task manager to identify which processes are consuming the most memory.
16 GB of real activity (excluding cache, which wouldn’t affect idle usage) appears quite high for a standby period.
OP said they have multiple apps open (iCUE, NZXT Cam, Steam, Logitech G hub, Lian-Li L-Connect, Amd Adrenalin, and Opera Gx), so it's not exactly idle in terms of memory usage. But I agree with checking task manager. If there's an actual memory leak, you should see memory usage of one of these go up a lot over time.
None of these will consume 32GB of RAM just by being active, even after long periods. Is it Windows 10 or 11?
Despite this, 16 gigs seems excessive. Additionally, you might not notice which processes are consuming all the memory in Task Manager if the software operates behind a more hidden layer, such as a driver. The initial action should be to review Task Manager.
Running a task needing around 48GB RAM either frees up memory for it or fills completely, causing swapping if needed. (Note: 7-Zip benchmarks can consume as much RAM as you specify.)
This was on Windows 11, and my version was 10 at the time the issue began.
7-zip reduced its usage to 39%, which was the minimum it could achieve. The report indicates that Opera consumes just 2-5 GB of memory, leaving the most RAM usage to other applications.
